Small Business Basics

In Spring 2010, SVTDC will present several small business basics programs.

These include:

First Steps to Business Ownership - March 2, 2010, 6:00-8:00pm - Cost: $25
Explore the Small Business Development Center, SBDC as a resource.  Determine the best legal entity for your business and the best methods for record keeping, business budgeting and managing cash; understanding the basic concepts of account; selecting an accountant and maximizing your relationship.  Discover what useful information is in your financial statements and the tax ramifications of owning your own business.

Financing Your Own Business - March 3, 2010, 6:00-8:00pm - Cost: $25
Understand the importance of developing a business plan; learn about sources of financing for your business and techniques for preparing to seek financing.  Understand best practices for selecting and working with a community lender and bank.

Marketing on a Budget - March 9, 2010, 6:00-8:00pm - Cost: $25
Discover ways of marketing on a shoe string budget an understanding customer needs and wants; determine the best methods of promoting your business and evaluating the effectivneness of your promotional efforts.

Tax Help for Small Businesses - March 24, 2010, 6:00-8:00pm - Cost: $25 (includes refreshments)
This Tax Preparation Workshop will offer local small businesses an overview of the tax preparation process and revisions in federal and state tax law for 2009 filing. Participants will have the opportunity to consult with a CPA on their tax questions. Additionally, the class covers common deductions and tax credits for small business operations that are commonly overlooked. Creating a User Friendly Website - April 20, 2010, 6:00-8:00pm - Cost: $25
This program focuses on the issues concerning website usability and design.  The fundamentals of design and layout, general usability guidelines, proper website navigation, and understanding amd meeting user expectations.

Internet Marketing - May  4, 2010, 6:00-8:00pm - Cost: $25
Learn ways you can market your business and promote products for low cost or no-cost.  Viral marketing, email marketing, marketing strategies, what works and what doesn’t and resources will be examined.

Information Security for Business - May 11, 2010, 6:00-8:00pm - Cost: $25
This program will cover basic security issues businesses should use to protect their IT assets.

Having an Internet Business - May  18, 2010, 6:00-8:00pm - Cost: $25
Learn how to start an internet business or move your existing brick and mortar business online.  Steps to setting up your internet business, determining the focus for an internet business, low cost/advanced marketing techniques, conduction market research, available e-Commerce tools and resources and successful internet business will be discussed.

Quick Books - May 27, 2010, 9:00am-5:00pm - Cost: TBD
Spend a day with a Quick Books expert who will help you discover how QuickBooks can make you and your business more successful.  During this program, you will discover everything QuickBooks can do for you, learn to use QuickBooks the RIGHT way and leave with confidence.
