This is your time to gain new knowledge, ideas and ways of thinking. The Southwest Virginia Technology Development Center offers a variety of programs for learners of all ages who want to explore an interest area, learn a new skill or enrich their personal or professional lives. Many offerings are both educational and just plain fun. Take charge of your own development by taking a LIVE-IT program.
Programs to be offered in Spring 2010 include:
- The Basics of Genealogy on the Web (March 15) - Learn how to use the web to find information about your ancestors. This program will introduce you to genealogy, cover vital records, and examine user-friendly internet sites, review database development, and much more.
- Tax Basics for Beginners (January 25) - Most people hate doing their taxes. They leave it to the last minute and then rush to get their paperwork together to meet the filing deadline. It doesn’t need to be such a chore. No prior tax experience required for this program. Enroll and you’ll be on the way to freedom from the complexity of taxes.
- Money 101 - Essential Money Skills (April 26) -CANCELLED A step by step guide to gaining control of your financial life. Topics will include setting priorities, making a budget, basics of banking, asset allocation and more…….
- Hunter Education Certificate Course (March 9 - 11, 6pm-9:30pm, $5 site fee) - This course is mandatory for first time hunters and hunters 12 to 15 years of age before buying a hunting license and to present the course completion certificate when the license is purchased. This course is even great for licensed hunters to brush up on hunter safety, principles of conservation, and sportsmanship! While hunting is safe in comparison to other common sports, each injury can cause extreme physical and emotional pain for the victim, the shooter, and their families. Hunter Education courses are designed to teach hunting safety, principles of conservation, and sportsmanship. Please note there is a fee for this course.
- Boating Safety Education Course (Saturday, May 15, 9am-4pm, $5 site fee) - Don’t miss this chance to take this approved boating safety course. The Virginia General Assembly enacted a law to establish a boating safety education compliance requirement. This requirement is phased-in over several years and applies to all Personal Watercraft (PWC) operators and operators of motorboats of 10hp and greater. All PWC operators 35 years old and younger must complete an approved and accepted boating safety course by July 1, 2010.
- Running 101 (March 29) FREE COURSE - If you are new to running or just want to know more about it, this is the perfect program for you. This program will provide you with enough information to help you get started.
- Performance Coaching (April 12) - Improving the confidence and effectiveness of employees requires a skilled coach. This program provides managers, supervisors and team leaders skills and techniques for coaching for peak performance. High Impact activities and role plays are a key component of this program.
- Information Security 101: Protecting your Personal PC Network (April 19) CANCELLED - Do you find the idea of securing your broadband network daunting? Do you frequently ask yourself “Is my network as secure as it needs to be?” Then this is the program for you.
- Manage your Career – 3 Easy Steps
Build confidence with professional career management assistance.
1. Explore a Career Option - May 4, 2010 - 6:00pm-8:00pm
Each person has a unique combination of aptitudes that provides insight into what types of work tasks and environments offer the greatest potential for success and satisfaction. Explore your own natural abilities to make informed career decisions. Research industry trends and challenges. Explore career alternatives. Determine what jobs match your abilities.
2. Marketing You - May 11, 2010 - 6:00pm-8:00pm
Resume Building, Employment Letters, Interviewing Skill, Negotiating Prepare a targeted marketing plan.
3. Job Hunting Strategies - May 18, 2010 - 6:00pm-8:00pm
Examine research tools to find job leads, salary information and more….
